How to Read a Nutrition Label

Reading a nutrition label can be a daunting task with all those numbers, percentages, and names. Take a deep breath though because we will teach you what that white and black box actually means. In the end, you will be a smarter consumer and make healthier decisions.

So flipping over you cereal box or any boxed food, you will see at the top of the nutrition label telling you how many servings there are in the box along with how many calories there are per serving. For example the box may say there are 24 servings in a box and one serving is 120 calories.

Ok now what is in the 120 calories? Well, there are carbohydrates, fat, protein, and viatmins, and minerals.

The purpose of reading a label is to become aware of what you are eating.

You want to be aware of is the amount of added sugars and fat in something. By looking at the ingrdients part of the nutrition label you will be able to see what is in the product and then above you will know how much of the ingrdient is in the product.

A nutrition label will allow you to choose a balance of things to eat during the day and allow you to calculate what you are eating.

Ask your doctor of what foods you should be eating and ones you should be avoiding. Then when you are grocery shopping you can use the nutrition label to help you make the choices your doctor recommended.
